Sikkim is all set to host the highest altitude marathon at the height of 17,800 ft. The highest altitude marathon is scheduled to be held from June 3 to June 5, 2019. The event will be organized at Gurudongmar, which is one of the most popular tourist spots in Sikkim, reports Northeast Now news.

The Gurudongmar marathon, which is one of the highest marathons in the world, will be organised by the Sikkim Mountaineering Association (SMA).

The marathon will have runners from different parts of the country and also from other countries across the world.

“The marathon will be organised to celebrate the World Runners Day, which falls on June 5,” said Sikkim Mountaineering Association president Kunzang Gyatso during a press conference at Gangtok on Thursday. Gyatso mentioned that the high altitude marathon will have runners in the age group of 14 to 60 years. He added that through the event is an initiative to create mass awareness on running and health.

A total of 70 runners have already registered their names so far and the registration process is still open offline. Gyatso expressed his belief that such event would further promote tourism and adventure sports in the state.
