Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling said that the state is fast moving towards achieving 100 per cent literacy which will make it the best state in the country. Chamling, who is serving the fifth term as Chief Minister of Sikkim, said his government is focusing on providing quality education to the youth of the state, Jagran Joshi.

Not only this, the state government is also doing its best to provide education to adults who were deprived of education in their childhood days.

“We have set up adult education centres at the gram panchayat level for such adults,” the Chief Minister.

Sikkim had a literacy rate of mere 54 per cent when Chamling came to power.

His government achieved 85 per cent literacy in 2011 and now aims to achieve 100 per cent literacy rate by in 2019, which will be his 25th year of chief ministership.

According to reports, the Sikkim government had set up seven universities and 25 colleges in the state in the last two years.

Apart from attaining 100 per cent literacy, his government also focuses on afforestation and trade and commerce. Many political observers believe Chamling wants to position himself as a pro-people chief minister.

Recently, Pawan Chamling became the longest-serving chief minister of India. He has completed 24 uninterrupted years as the Chief Minister of Sikkim. Chamling broke the record of former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, who was CM for 23 years.

Chamling, who is also the founding president of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), became Chief Minister in December 1994. Before forming his party and elected as the Chief Minister, Chamling served as Minister for Industries, Information and Public Relations from 1989 to 1992 in the Nar Bahadur Bhandari Cabinet.
