In its quest to quash the concept of educated unemployed, Japfü Christian College (JCC), Kigwema on Thursday organised a skill development training program for its students, in the college auditorium.

During the training program, weaver, Vichutale Zhasa taught more than 1000 students about traditional weaving while Dr. Husca Ayemi demonstrated the Axone making process. Zarano Kire showcased recycling waste paper into useable items and Tialemla Ao taught the process of making traditional Ao delicacy, Amso.

Speaking on the occasion, Colo Mero, director of Life Enterprise urged the students to do away with the traditional mindset “salary without work.” If the young generation can pick up the skill, they can intelligently incorporate traditional modern fusion weaves for livelihood intervention avenues, he said. Ripples of change are urgently required for self sustaining ‘our crippled and dependent economy’ said Mero.

Principal of JCC, Visakhonu Hibo exhorted the students to learn skills and become employable graduates as opposed to educated unemployed.

JCC annually holds two skill development events. Rural artisans, modern full time/hobbyists comprising of florists, chefs, organic gardeners and entrepreneurs among others are often show-cased in the institute. The college also maintains 6 skill based clubs where students learn and earn.

A campus job centre is also in place to teach dignity of labour by offering part time paid jobs for car washing, window cleaning and odd jobs required by residents of Japfü Christian College, Kigwema.
