SKK dismayed over recently repaired road condition

Expressing shock and dismay over the deplorable road condition connecting Nagaland University Hq, Lumami that was recently repaired, the All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) has urged the PWD (NH) to intervene and initiate quality work along the stretch strictly as per prescribed specifications without delay.

In an open letter to the chief engineer PWD (NH), SKK president, Atokiho Sumi, and general secretary, Hutoshe Kits, pointed out that works on “improvement of riding quality to NH 702A from km 5/460 to 16/000 under NH Mokokchung division” was recently completed, but when SKK carried out on-spot verification it found “no semblance of work ever carried out except for some patches of blacktopped portions.”

SKK stated that blacktopped layers have all eroded and only the soil remains with potholes and muddy water.

It said pathetic condition of the completed road was causing inconvenience to the local populace, University staff and students.

SKK said the present condition of the road spoke for itself about the quality of work carried out at the cost of Rs 3.97 crore approximately.

Affirming its stand, SKK cautioned that failure to deliver a quality road as per specifications would compel the union “to adopt other alternative measures, much to the displeasure of the Department and the contractor”.

SKK to monitor all ongoing road works

SKK has stated that it will strictly monitor all ongoing road works being carried out in Sumi inhabited areas under PMGSY Phase IX Batch I (2017-18): Satakha to Momi (4.2km) at the cost of Rs 222.98 lakh; Satoi to Ikiye to Itovi (11.60km) at the cost of Rs 429.5 lakh; Niuland to S. Hetoi (9km) at the cost of Rs 612.22 lakh; Achikuhu to Yevishe via Yeshito (12km) at the cost of Rs 768.10 lakh; Yeshito to Kikhevi via Khatara (18km) at the cost of Rs 1127.52 lakh; Satoi to Tsuruhu (5.20km) at the cost of Rs 351.58 lakh; Tokiye to Thokihimi (12km) at the cost of Rs 730.67 lakh.

In this regard, the SKK has appealed to all the responsible contractors to sincerely carry out quality works as per specifications. It stated that the union would continually monitor the works to ensure that work was being carried out satisfactorily.

Further, SKK has appealed to the responsible departmental officers inspecting the works to insist on prescribed specifications and to not compromise with inferior quality.

SKK also urged all inspection officers to carry out their works sincerely and warned that if they were found conniving with contractors leading to sub-standard works, the union would take appropriate courses of action as deemed fit either customarily or legally. SKK stated that contractors would also be held equally responsible for any poor quality work and stringent steps would be initiated to blacklist their firms.
