SKK organises plantation day at Yehemi village

The Sümi Kiphimi Küqhakulu (SKK) organised plantation day on May 21, at Yehemi village under Zunheboto district in collaboration with the Forest department, marking the forth coming World Environment Day under the theme: “Our nature: our health, our wealth”. 

A press release from SKK president Atokiho Sumi stated that, key address was presented by Forester-1 Aghunato, Shikavi Kinimi on behalf of the department. 

He highlighted about the threat and consequences as a result of deforestation and alarming global warming coupled with the negative effect on preservation of bio- diversity, ecology, flora & fauna, health, nature, water soil etc. 

With this in view, he said that government has launched the plantation programme. He also encouraged the villagers to undertake the programme annually to yield positive result and also assured best possible cooperation. 

The short speeches were also presented by H. Kaito Chophy headman of Yehemi.  He enlightened the officials on genesis of the initiative that was launched in 2001 undertaken by village council with due approval of the citizens. 

Yehemi village has reserved two shifts of agro land and large area of non-cultivation forest to be preserved and concerned for nature and habitation of flora and fauna.  The village has also imposed total ban on fishing, wherein defaulters are penalised as per the council resolution even to the extent of expulsion. 

He briefed on initiative of the council on organic farming and appealed the government departments to cooperate with them so as to bring yield positive result.

President of SKK, Atokiho Sümi expressed expressed his hope that the initiative and project will benefit the upcoming generation who will appreciate the thoughtful wisdom of Yehemi leaders. He also appealed the department to tie up with stakeholders who are truly dedicated toward fulfilling the desired objective of the department.

The programme was chaired by S. Zhevihe Sumi, tribunal SKK, invocation prayer by Kahoi Achumi and benediction by pastor SBAK Nito Mount, Yehemi village Rev. Hetovi Achumi. 

Villagers involving the council, churches, students union and citizens attended the programme.
