SKM only regional party that rejected CAB

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party became the only regional party from Northeast that voted against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha yesterday. The CAB was passed by the Lok Sabha at the stroke of midnight with 311 members voting in favour and 80 voted against the bill, reports the Northeast Today.

MPs from several regional parties like the Nagaland Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) of Nagaland, Naga People’s Front (NPF) of Manipur, Mizo National Front (MNF) of Mizoram and National People’s Party (NPP) of Meghalaya voted in favour of the bill except the SKM MP from Sikkim.

The other MPs from Northeast who voted against the bill are Congress MPs.

Sikkim’s lone Lok Sabha MP Indrahang Subba of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha party took a strong stand against the bill during the debate in the Lok Sabha last night. He maintained the stand that prime concern is to safeguard the interest of the Sikkimese people.

“We have always been living in peace following the principle of brotherhood with a sense of national integration and safeguarding it is our prime focus,” he said.

Chief Minister P.S.Tamang has time and again placed request to the Centre for exempting Sikkim from the purview of the Citizen’s Amendment Bill which was passed in the Lok Sabha yesterday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, SKM said that the party they will not give up the fight to work on excluding Sikkim from its purview.
