United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi Saturday was unanimously elected as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party at a meeting in New Delhi.

“Sonia Gandhi elected as the leader of Congress Parliamentary Party! She says, ‘we thank the 12.13 crore voters for reposing faith in the Congress party,” AICC chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted on Saturday. Sonia Gandhi will lead the Congress parliamentarians in the 17th Lok Sabha again. “In an unprecedented crisis, lies an unprecedented opportunity,” said Sonia after being elected.

“We were up against an election machinery with all odds stacked against us — unlimited resources, ability to manipulate public opinion and the spread of mischievous propaganda. I congratulate you for standing up successfully for the values and ideals of the Congress party,” she said.

She applauded the ‘kaaryakartas’ as frontline soldiers whose resilience ensured 12.3 crore votes. She also thanked the voters, calling a vote for Congress as a vote to safeguard the Constitution. Sonia Gandhi will now pick the party’s floor leader in the Lok Sabha. There has been speculation that Rahul Gandhi, who has decided to quit as Congress chief, may opt for this position. The other front runner for the post is three-time MP, Shashi Tharoor.

Cong won’t stake claim for LoP: The Congress on Saturday said that it will not formally stake claim for the post of Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha as it is two seats short of the required number of 54. The party also said that Rahul Gandhi will continue to be the Congress President. The Congress won just 52 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats in the recently concluded General Elections. However, Congress is currently short of three members that would allow it to qualify for the post of Leader of Opposition. The party was unable to make that cut even in the 2014 elections.
