In a boost to state medical sector, the Central government has approved setting up of the second medical college in Mon district.

In a tweet, Health minister, S. Pangnyu Phom informed that the Centre has approved setting up of a new Government Medical College by upgrading the District Hospital Mon.

“This landmark decision of the Union government will boost Nagaland government’s effort to revolutionise the state health sector,” Pangnyu tweeted.

While thanking the BJP-led NDA government under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Pangnyu said the approval of a new Medical College has fulfilled the long cherished dream of the people of Nagaland and Eastern Nagas in particular.

When contacted, Pangnyu said the upcoming medical college would not only cater to the people in eastern region of the state but would also benefit people from some parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and even the Nagas and others living along the India-Myanmar border. He also said that the state government will prepare the Memorandum of Understanding and submit it to the Centre by next week.

Pangnyu said that the PDA government under the leadership of chief minister, Neiphiu Rio and deputy CM, Y Patton was committed to developing the state in all sectors.

In a letter, Union Health minister Harsh Vardhan hoped that under Pangnyu’s “dynamic leadership” the new college would help in meeting the medical needs of residents of the region and ensure a healthy and prosperous India. Vardhan also said that he looks forward to Pangnyu’s cooperation in early commencement of the medical college.

Meanwhile, construction works of the Nagaland Medical College at Phriebagei, Kohima, was also in progress. After his visit to the site on August 26, Pangnyu said that the work was in full swing. Due to COVID-19 lockdown measures, he said that work could not progress as expected. It may be recalled that foundation stone of the medical college in Kohima was unveiled by chief minister Neiphiu Rio in March 2014.
