Storm in a teacup

By Nagaland Post | Publish Date: 5/9/2019 12:11:25 PM IST

The statement of our Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Chowkidar Temjen Imna Along, that, “Nagas are Indians and Nagas are proud to be part of this great country”, has created another storm in a teacup; with the Naga Hoho/Haha taking the opportunity to parade its pseudo-nationalism on the issue.

The deafening silence of the NH when I charged them and the NSF of including non-Naga Tribes in their organisations, and its sudden attempt to project itself as the defender of the Nagas and our history on this issue shows them for what they are:- a bunch of hypocritical weasels who have no shame in practising double standards in public forums. First, purge your membership of non-Naga Tribes, before you presume to speak for Nagas.

But I write this, not for our Chowkidar or the Haha, but for the benefit of the many young Nagas who have unknowingly taken sides on the issue on Social Media, especially Facebook.

The first thing everyone should know is that the terms India and Indian have nothing to do with race, ethnicity, tribe or culture; they are political term which denotes the geographical boundaries and the different races and cultures of the people residing within the said boundaries. A Naga residing within the boundary of India is both a Naga and an Indian.

If you choose not to be identified as an Indian, you must stop using Indian Currency, go back to your village, cultivate your field, eat only what you produce or can barter for, stop using electricity and vehicles and start making everything you need. Then India will realise we don’t want them or anything they have; and grant us independence.

If you do not wish to do so, join the N.S.C.N.-K or accept the fact that you are Indian. There is no middle ground, you cannot have your cake, by stating you are Naga, not Indian;, and eat it, by consuming Indian food, wearing Indian clothes and living in houses built with Indian materials, purchased with money given by the Indian Taxpayer.

So, please understand that this is just a minor issue, that the NH, which is guilty of adulterating Naga Purity, has taken up this issue for its own selfish ends and not for the welfare of Nagas. And as for our Chowkidar Imna Along, I, personally, do not agree with him; for he is proud to be an Indian, whereas I’m ashamed to be one. But both of us for the same reason; Chowkidar Narendra Modi.
