Normal life in Manipur’s hill district was hit on the Friday, the first day of 48-hour general strike called jointly by All Tribal Students Union Manipur, All Naga Students Association Manipur and the Kuki Students Organization.
The strike call was given by the tribal student bodies demanding immediate restoration of normalcy in Manipur University.
Functioning of Manipur University remained paralysed after the students, teachers and staff of the Central university resorted to various forms of agitations demanding removal of Prof AP Pandey from the post of vice chancellor.
While pressing the agitating MU fraternity to allow the fact-finding committee to begin its investigation into the allegations against AP Pandey, the tribal student bodies are demanding the authority concerned to take up all efforts to open the university considering the academic careers of students.
The 48-hour general strike commenced from midnight of August 9.
Reports from Churachandpur and Chandel districts said that normal life was severely hit. Shops and business establishments remained close for the day. Schools, colleges and other educational institutions remained shut while government offices wore a deserted look with no staff in the offices. In these districts, strike supporters took to the street along the main roads and prevented movement of all kinds of vehicles.
Similar situations were reported from other hill districts except in Tamenglong and Noney districts where normal movement of vehicles was reported. All shops and business establishments remained opened for the day.
