SVC Phek seeks clarification from CPO

Sümi Village Council (SVC) Phek while appreciating Chakhesang Public Organisaton (CPO) and its research committee for bringing out a book on Chakhesang languages has sought clarification whether the other languages apart from Chokri, Khezha- Kuzhale and Poula were considered as Chakhesang.

In a press release, SVC Phek chairman, Neitelo Rhakho, said they fully understand that the outcome of the research was for better communication and to foster brotherhood among those that speak Chakhesang languages such as Chokri, Khezha-Kuzhale and Poula. “A comparative study of these three languages is well appreciated and for which we do not have any comments or complain,” SVC said.  It, however, pointed out that Chakhesang does have Sümi, Rengma and Sangtam languages, adding that there was not a single word or line mentioned about Sümi, Rengma and Sangtam languages. “They are totally ignored and excluded as Chakhesang languages,” SVC lamented. According to SVC, there were eight villages, which speak Sümi language, and the third largest group among Chakhesang. It said there was also Rengma speaking village and Sangtam speaking village.  “A comparative study of these languages may not be taken into consideration as the CPO and Research Committee had selected to study only three languages. Yet, the existence of other languages should be mentioned, if the CPO considered them to be part of Chakhesang,” SVC stated.

Stating that language is one identity, SVC said it appeared that “CPO and its research committee denied their existence and identity among Chakhesang.” SVC remarked that exclusion of brothers and sisters “may not bring unity and brotherhood”, but rather create disunity among own people.
