T.R. Zeliang demands clarification on NH 29

Leader of opposition, T.R. Zeliang has asked National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) to clarify whether the two firms engaged for constructing four-lane Dimapur-Kohima road and maintaining the existing road were complying with the provisions of the contract agreement.
In a letter to NHIDCL Dimapur branch office general manager Arun Kumar Gupta, Zeliang also wanted to know if the two firms – M/s ECI Engineering & Construction Co Ltd and M/s Gayatri Projects Ltd, both from Hyderabad– had sub-let their contracts to second/third parties and, if so, to furnish their names for transparency, as discussed in the series of meetings held while he was the CM.
He regretted that despite maintenance of the existing two-lane road having been sanctioned, the general public was suffering. Zeliang said during the series of meetings held at the chief minister’s office and new secretariat earlier, he was satisfied with Gupta’s explanation on the agreements entered between NHIDCL and the two firms.
Zeliang further said, as per NHIDCL GM’s explanation, he was given to understand that maintenance of the existing road was covered under the contract agreement while construction of the new four-lane was on. He, however, expressed surprise that the existing road been badly affected due to the ongoing work.
Normally, journey from Dimapur to Kohima took around two hours, but now due to the prevailing condition, it took anywhere between three and five hours, causing immense hardship and problems to commuters, he pointed out.
