Having learnt about the successful implementation of springshed water development programme in the State, a 13-member team from Ukhrul, Manipur arrived here to see the success story initiated by the land resource department (LRD).

The team was led by programme coordinator of Volunteers for Village Development (VVD), Pamchingla Kumrah, village council leaders and others.

Led by Kohima district project officer (DPO) Dr. Menuosietuo Tseikha and officers from the land resource directorate, the visiting team was taken to Thizama village where the springshed project has been implemented. The team visited the percolation tank site-- springshed project at Thizama village, sponsored by NABARD and developed by LRD Kohima district and also the springshed development staggered contour trench at Thizama village.

Meanwhile, speaking to Nagaland Post, team leader Pamchingla Kumrah said the success story of springshed project under the LRD came to light during seminars and workshops, which prompted them to organise the field trip to Nagaland. She said, after visiting the sites, they realised that many improvements had to be done on the first springshed project that was initiated, stressing that rapport between the government and community was very important for successful implementation of any such project. Kumrah said the implementation of the first project in 2020 sponsored by NABARD already saw an impact in mitigating water scarcity and exuded confidence that, with two more projects in pipeline, the villagers would get huge relief from water scarcity.

According to her, water in some villages dried up in the last 10-15 years and now the villagers were compelled to buy water. Therefore, she said it was high time to rejuvenate the springs.

DPO explained the site projects and how the implementation was done with financial support from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and cooperation from the village community. He urged the visitors to understand the concept of the project for its successful replication. Thanking the visiting team for organising the field trip, he said their visit would boost the morale of all those involved to be more committed during implementation of the project.

NABARD DDM, Poji informed the visitors that NABARD had implemented nine springshed projects in Nagaland and one in Ukhrul, adding two more would be implemented in Ukhrul. He expressed the bank’s desire to sponsor more, if such projects came up. Thizama Village Council (TVC) chairman Kesoneilie Theünuo explained how water shortage could be minimised with springshed projects, adding that the village had many more success stories to share that where scripted with the help of LRD. He said in one of the springsheds, water was expected to increase in future since many trenches had been dug and trees preserved. Thanking State LRD, NABARD and TVC for making the field trip meaningful and success, the visiting team expressed hope to replicate the same in their village as there were a lot of similarities.

Earlier in the morning, LRD director Renben Jami explained to the visiting team at the directorate the positive impact the springshed project had made. LRD joint director Albert Ngullie gave a power point presentation on inventorisation and revival of springs in Nagaland.
