Tehok FC stun holders Vanguard

Two-time defending champions Vanguard FC suffered a shocking defeat to Tehok FC, Mon 2-1 in the 5th Capt. N. Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament at IG Stadium, here on Thursday.

Tehok FC displayed a spirited and well-coordinated effort to win the match. Shamba Samson Konyak, former player of Vanguard FC, drew the first blood for Tehok FC in the 9th minute. Vanguard FC fought back and found the equaliser through Kakhevi Assumi in the 17th minute. But a second goal from Salu in the 47th minute for sealed Tehok FC a spot in the pre-quarterfinal round.

With the loss, Vanguard FC made an early exit from the tournament. 

Earlier, in the first match, One Ten FC, Dimapur beat Jalukie Town FC, Peren 3-1 in a thrilling encounter. Both teams failed to score in the first session. 

Jalukie Town FC took the lead in the 42nd minute through Keyipuakieube Wingkiong’s strike. One Ten FC, however, came back strongly scoring three successive goals in a span of 20 minutes, with Joseph Yeptho scoring two goals and Mongtei netting the other. 

A hard-fought goal in the 78th minute by Jalukie Town FC gave an opportunity for an equalizer but that was not enough as the match ended 3-2 in favour of One Ten FC, Dimapur.

With the win, One Ten FC entered the quarterfinal.

In another encounter, Naga FC, Kohima trounced Kuki Youth Club, Medziphema 7-1. 

Naga FC, Kohima turned out to be the most coordinated team in the tournament so far.  

A brace from Avilhuo Yhome and a goal each from Keneisei Tetso, Petevizo Kezieo, Seyiekhrietuo Souhu, Menuosieto and Dipusa secured a huge victory for Naga FC.  

The lone goal for Kuki Youth Club, Medziphema came in the 60th minute through Jonkhogam. Naga FC will play Arsenic FC Zunheboto in the pre-quarterfinal round.

In the fourth and final match of the day, Pisgah United FC, Tuensang thrashed Hugelhifliers FC, Mokokchung 4-1. Taku was the star of the match scoring two goals in favour of Pisgah United FC, Tuensang in the 9th and 34th minutes.

While Peshie and Kelep also scored a goal each. The consolation goal for Mokokchung team was scored by Hapong in the 69th minute. 

After the day’s play, ten teams have made it through to the second round with one spot left.
