The mysterious sting of death!

By Nagaland Post | Publish Date: 8/25/2018 11:32:40 AM IST

One fact that we do not want to hear or think about is death. Although, it is so real and so close, yet we live as though we will never meet death. Death has no clock to keep its time. It is free to move about during the day or late night and enter any home as it chooses. Death can be found in homes, schools, colleges, roads, hospitals, fields, villages, towns, etc. It can visit us in sleep or when we are awake. Some people go to sleep only to sleep eternally, whereas others rise in the morning only to see the last rising of the Sun.

Death is the end of physical existence. As we close our eyes in death, everything closes for us too. Death shows no partiality. No power on earth can revive a dead man. What equalizes every man and woman is death. It does not pity the new born child nor the old aged man and woman. The sting of death awaits all. No matter who we are, the power and strength of death will pull us down beneath the ground to experience the corruption of the body. We will be hidden for ages to come. The passage of time will wipe away even the sweetest memories in the minds and hearts of the beloved. The coming generations will not remember our existence. We become historical beings only to be forgotten. We are less privileged than the dinosaurs which are remembered for thousand years.

The icy hand of death can catch us at an instant. The body which is cherished and loved with much care and caress will decay with death. We move about as if we will never leave behind our loved ones, riches, house and land. Who on earth has taken his wealth to heaven or hell? Hell has never become rich in spite of the presence of many foolish rich men and women. And heaven is never made poor by their absence. There is no poverty in heaven or hell. Both are self-sufficient by themselves. They can exist by themselves. This is why a small coffin is enough to contain the body. The rest (material goods) are left behind. What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves? (Lk.9:25)

The thought of death is painful for most people. Nobody wants to leave the beauty of this world and its pleasures. But the world does not need us for long. The world will continue without our presence after death. The Sun will continue to give light and heat, the Moon will glow in the silence of the night, the Stars will glitter in the sky. The coming generations will continue to uphold the world. In this world, no one is so important that s/he must continue to live for thousand years. As long as we live, we are equally important. Once we die, we are equally useless to some extent. This is human life! Life is sacred and it must be respected at all cost, yet its sacredness and dignity slowly cease with the dawn of death. Death is so mysterious! It is difficult to comprehend the nature of death and what follows after. No one is sure about what lies beyond the tomb.

Who among us will shed no tears at the death of our parents, children or friends? The heart is torn apart at the sight of death. The tears of the heart are bitter to bear. With the passage of time, one’s own parents, spouse, children and friends will depart. They go ahead to tell no tale. We will all tread the same path of death after them. The design of death is unscrupulous. Most men die early than women. It knows whom to detain and sustain. The gift of life comes along with death package. The package is more frightening than life (the gift) itself.

The fact of death is fake. Behind the sting of death, there lies the power of eternal life for those who believe in Jesus Christ, our resurrection and life. Amidst the sad tune of death, the joyful song of resurrection arises to calm the just souls. The soul awakes to eternity. The power of resurrection overcomes the sting of death. Death is destroyed by the resurrection of life (Jn. 11:25). Therefore, believing in Jesus Christ is not a short term contract, it is for eternity. Blessed are those who live and die for Jesus (Rom. 14:8) for theirs is the Kingdom of God. Only those who believe in Jesus (The Life) will receive life from Him for He is the Way, the Truth and the Life (Jn.11:16). We die only to rise to eternal life. We must be able to say like Job, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there; the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:21).

Life is perishable, but every Christian is destined for eternal life. We must not change the destiny of eternal life by our ill-mannered life. The short life on earth must be lived for the well-being of oneself and others. This is the only contribution we can give to the world; the world that nurture us freely. The rest will be taken care of by God who knows all in all.
