The spirit of Christmas

By Nagaland Post | Publish Date: 12/19/2019 11:33:20 AM IST

“Peace on earth and goodwill to men” is the spirit of Christmas. It is a time for celebration of joy, love, renewal of friendship and peace with each other all over the world irrespective of differences in religious faith and beliefs including those who don’t belong to any. It is a time to celebrate both spiritually as well as in our mundanely. It enables everyone to share their happiness and goodwill with one another. It is a precious season for hanging out friends and family. It’s a time to renew old friendship and make new ones. Come closer with near and dear ones in the family.

Time for renewal of faith in GOD of Jesus for those who believed in Jesus Christ. For them it is the moment of joyous celebration of the arrival of “Immanuel” which means “God with us” (Mathew 1:23). He was also called “the Son of God” (Luke1:28) who came to the world with love and peace.
There are many poignant instances where the spirit of Christmas has overwhelmed the killing of one another in the war front during WW-I &II by impromptu declaration of truce to celebrate the spirit of Christmas together as fellow human being, not as a sworn enemy; singing Christmas carol songs, playing games, or just merry making together maintaining a temporary atmosphere of peace and happiness in the midst of killing one another. What a contrasting scene created by the real spirit of Christmas.
India is a great country which is considered as the most tolerant and accommodative society where people from other faith who were persecuted in their country had found sanctuary. Thus, in the past, the Parse (Zoroastrian) from ancient Persia, the Jews (Judaism) and Christian from Israel & Palestine had found safe refuge in Indian when they were persecuted by the Roman in their country and continued to pursue their own faith in India. Even one of the 12 (twelve) Jesus chosen disciples St: Thomas had come, settled, established churches in the south and died in India.
The Hindu being a polytheistic religion has a lot of religious freedom. Because of the spiritual democracy and tolerant- culture, India has been the birth place of few prominent religions of the world, like Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. They are mainly the offshoots of the main religion of India, the Hinduism.
It is unfortunate that, lately, for many Christians in India, the joy of Christmas is marred by harassment of all sorts to the extent of physical harm and violent destruction of festive decoration and quite orderly gathering of the Christians with flimsy excuses of disturbances to public order or dangerous religious indulgence. It has become a moment of anxiety and tension instead of the joyous occasion of celebration like in any other places. This scenario is the travesty of irrationality and hypocrisy prevailing in our society today which seems to have been motivated by political agenda.
It not joins the celebration; at least maintain tolerance and respect by allowing the celebration of the spirit of Christmas. That will win the trust and goodwill of the minority section of the people which is required in a pluralistic society like ours, unless it violate the constitutional provisions. Traditionally and religiously every religion has a respectable place in our society from the time immemorial. Sensible section of the people should condemn such religion bigotry and religious terrorism that is being shown in the country today negating the unique place of India in the history which is considered as a land of spirituality & religious tolerance. MERRY CHRISTMAS.
