Training on ‘banana fibre extraction and handicraft making’

STINER-TFC, SASRD, NU, Medziphema campus, Nagaland centre organised a hands-on training on “banana fibre extraction and handicraft making” at technology demonstration unit under the initiative of Dean SASRD and project in-charge STINER-TFC, prof. Akali Sema on March 3, 2021.

A press release by SASRD NU stated that while addressing the concept of the training, prof. Akali Sema emphasised the importance of developing new skills and turning them into self sustaining business and how their centre could help in bringing in and introducing such relevant technologies for the benefit of the people.

This was followed by the first technical session where project assistant, STINER-TFC, Dr. Sentirenla Changkiri presented on the concept of banana fibre extraction, craft making and its prospects in Nagaland.

She stated that abundance of both cultivated and wild banana were available in the region round the year however, people were yet to venture into its economical ways. She also stressed on the mass production of the fibre while mentioning that Nagaland was unable to meet its rising demand and how the project can be collectively made into a self sustaining enterprise in the region.

Later, the participants were given a hands-on training by STINER staff on fibre extraction and basics on handicraft making.

A total of 15 participants which comprised of house wives and unemployed youths attended the training programme. The closing session was conducted by project assistant, STINER-TFC, Rokosieno Zao.

The objective of the training programme was to create awareness among the locals to help realise the economic values of banana plant.
