NSCN (I-M) on Monday unanimously elected Qhehezu Tuccu as the chairman, NSCN/Yaruiwo, GPRN and Tongmeth Wangnao as vice chairman NSCN/vice president, GPRN.  Both Tuccu and Wangnao were members of the collective leadership.

According to MIP, NSCN (I-M) ato kilonser, Th. Muivah pronounced the declaration of the election of Q. Tuccu and Tongmeth Wangnao during the National Hoho held at Central Headquarters, Hebron. Both Tuccu and Wangnao shall hold their respective posts for a term of 6 years as per the Yehzabo, MIP stated.

The ‘oath of allegiance and secrecy’ was administered by NJB convener (chief justice), Khriesarokho Peseyie.

It may be recalled that the post of chairman was lying for almost three years after the death (June 28, 2016) of Isak Chishi Swu, one of the founding members. On the other hand, the post of vice chairman fell vacant following the demise of late ‘gen.’(Retd.) Kholi Konyak on December 12, 2018.

A senior NSCN (I-M) member informed Nagaland the names of both the leaders were proposed after a joint consultation meeting of the collective leader, members of the collective leadership, senior leaders of NSCN/GPRN, steering committee convenor and co-convenor and kilo kilonser.

The NSCN (I-M) leader said around 4000 members of NSCN/GPRN both from civil and Army wing overwhelmingly agreed to the proposal. The member also said that senior members were hopeful that the induction of the new chairman and vice chairman would rejuvenate/re-strengthen NSCN/GPRN.

Born on February 20, 1945, Tuccu who hails from Nihoto village joined the Naga national service in 1980. He held several posts from 1982 as acting chairman UT, kilonser of various important portfolios and member of the steering committee. He was later made member of the collective leadership in 2013.

Tongmeth Wangnao, who was born in 1958, joined the Naga national service in 1987. Till 1995, he served as secretary before he was elected Tatar in 1995. From 1998, he held important posts in the capacity of kilonser, Speaker, Tatar Hoho, member of the steering committee and NJB convener.

He was also made member of the collective leadership in 2013.

After being elected, Q Tuccu gave his commitment to the house that “in the name of Jehovah, he will not deviate from his stand and go against the will and decision of the Nagas.”

Tongmeth Wangnao, while admitting the fact that though there were many senior members who deserved the VP’s post, acknowledged the privilege given to him to reach this far due to the co-operation and support of all members.

He appealed to the members to stand by him, feeding him with all the ideas and advice that will further uplift the national movement in the manner Naga people desire.

Prior to the declaration, ato kilonser Th. Muivah reminded in his short speech that “Nagas are not a lost people, because our forerunners like Imkong Meren and A.Z. Phizo took the right decision at the right time that Nagas will be the master of themselves- their land and their future and Nagalim will be for Christ.”

Muivah also reminded the members that many nations perished with the change of the world, however Nagas took the decision to be for Christ and thus sustained the existence.

“God will not be please if we deviate our ways from the decision taken by our elders with tears and blood”, he said.

He further urged the members to take strong stand to adhere to the principle followed by former chairman late Isak Chishi Swu who declared unity of the Nagas in the name of Jesus Christ.

He said late Isak Swu signed the historic Framework Agreement to regain what was at the point of getting lost under pressure from adversaries.

Muivah also asserted that the elected leaders shall not be above the people and the nation, but will abide by the national will and decision in accordance with the Yehzabo and Nagalim for Christ”.
