Armed miscreants suspected to be militants on Wednesday shot dead two persons including a village chief in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district

The deceased village chief was identified as Letkhotinthang @ Thangneo Kipgen while the other was identified as Thangminlun Haokip (19).

Thangneo Kipgen was the chief of Hengjang village who settled at Bongbal Khullen after his village was displaced during Kuki-Naga ethnic clash.

They were found dead inside a vehicle at Bongbal village under Maphou police station of Kangpokpi district today, morning around 10 am. After the police were informed by the villagers, they rushed to the spot to find bullet injury marks on the bodies of the duo. Villagers suspect the duo were shot dead by the miscreants after forcibly stopping the vehicle they were travelling in.

Police as well as the villagers are yet to establish the motive behind the assassination of the duo. The police  has transferred the dead bodies to JNIMS morgue, Imphal after lodging an FIR case.

Meanwhile, Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi has strongly condemned the “merciless” killing of Thangneo and Thangminlun and set a 24-hour deadline to book the culprit(s).

The Inpi suspect hands of armed militants behind the merciless killing as per a statement signed by its general secretary Lamminlun Singsit who also quested the law and order situation in Manipur. The statement asked whether the government has done their duty in order to maintain peace and harmony among the communities of Manipur.

If the authority fails to arrest the culprit within the set 24 hours deadline, government should bear the responsibility for any untoward incidents arising out of public agitation, the statement warned.
