Two minor girls died after they were swept away by water current of Imphal River, police said on Sunday. The deceased girls were identified as Oshin Dangmei daughter of Rozer Dangmei of Mahabali Mathak Leikai and Gaiguiliu Panmei daughter of Ambition of Panmei of Laphok village in Noney district and currently staying in imphal’s Mahabali.

The dead bodies of the two girls of age around seven were fished out by personnel of the state police, fire fighters, State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force who launched a search operation soon after the girls were swept away by the current of Imphal River at Mahabali under Porompat police station of Imphal East district.
The two girls were reportedly swept away by Imphal River at Mahabali yesterday afternoon around 4.30 pm. The dead body of one of the girls was recovered by locals of Mahabali who launched a search operation immediately after they found missing the two who were seen playing at the river bank.
The body of the second girl was fished out by the joint rescue team on Sunday  afternoon from a place around 100 meter away from the place where they were believed to have been drowned.  Locals believed that both girls who were seen playing at the riverbank went into the river to swim later as their clothes were spotted in the riverbank by family members and locals.
Oshin’s grandfather, Tanchung Dangmei said that they came to know about the incident after one of Oshin’s friend, who had returned home after playing told them that they were playing in the riverbank.
Even through Imphal River is not presently flooded because of the scarce rainfall this monsoon, the current is strong.
