Seventeen persons, mostly service staff in an apartment complex, were arrested for sexually assaulting a minor hearing impaired girl for seven months, police said on Tuesday.
The accused are in the age group of 23-66 and were working in the apartment complex as plumbers, lift operators, security guard and others.
The minor girl is the daughter of a resident in the apartment complex.
The accused have been charged under Indian Penal Code provisions and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A court here remanded them in judicial custody till July 31.
The matter came to light when the girl narrated her ordeal to her elder sister on Monday and their parents were informed. A police complaint was lodged by the girls’ parents.
The girl, who is hearing-impaired and lives with her parents in the largely unoccupied 300-apartment complex, was allegedly sedated and given spiked soft drinks by the attackers. The police say she was also blackmailed with videos of the assault. 
A 66-year-old lift operator was the first to attack the girl after she returned from school and was cycling around the complex, the police said. He allegedly invited other men, who filmed each other raping the child. The accused men allegedly took the girl to various places in the complex, including the basement, terrace, gym and public restrooms.
The rapes were revealed when the girl confided in her older sister, who in turn told their parents. The family lodged a police complaint on Sunday. 
Meanwhile DMK leader M.K. Stalin in a statement said the accused should be tried and given severe punishment.
Lawyers attack accused on Chennai court premises
Lawyers at the Additional City Civil Court in Chennai attacked the 17 accused in a child rape case as they were being brought out of the court hall. Although a heavy posse of police personnel were on the court premises, a group of lawyers beat the accused on the corridor.
Police managed to retrieve a few accused from hands of agitating lawyers and pushed them inside the Family Court and CBI court. Tension prevails now as lawyers refused to allow the accused free passage. Additional Commissioner of Police H.M.Jayaram and Joint Commissioner of Police T.S. Anbu are at the scene with fresh reinforcements
5 boys rape 8-year-old girl in Uttarakhand
Five boys allegedly raped an eight-year-old girl in their neighbourhood when her parents were not at home in Sahaspur, the police said today.
During questioning by police, the boys, aged between nine to 14 years, said that they had watched pornography on a mobile phone two days before committing the crime, a police official said. The alleged incident, that took place on July 12, came to light late on saturday evening when the victim’s parents reported the matter to the police. The accused boys were detained and they were remanded to a juvenile home by Chief Magistrate of Juvenile Justice Board Bhavdeep Rawat. According to the police official, the girl was playing outside her house, when the boys lured her to an empty house, which belonged to one of the accused, by offering her chocolates and gangraped her. The girl’s parents who were not at home when the incident took place. They got suspicious when the child did not take dinner and was unusually silent. When asked by her mother, the girl told her about here ordeal, the police said. Expressing shock over the incident, the chief magistrate of the juvenile justice board said it was an indication of the dangerous consequences of free access to Internet and advised parents to keep mobile phones out of the reach of children.
