The chairman of the Manipur-based militant group United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Rajkumar Meghen alias Sanayaima was released, a day ahead of his scheduled release, from the Guwahati Central Jail on Saturday after serving a 10 year jail term. Meghen was reportedly whisked away by a team of National Investigation Agency (NIA) from an undisclosed location in Guwahati, Sunday evening. Meghen was scheduled to arrive Imphal on Monday

Sources said that Meghen along with his son RK Chinglen and his lawyer M. Gunedhor have been kept in a government-run guest house facility in Assam. According to reports, Meghen has been advised by the Home ministry not to go back to Manipur for the time being and to stay put at the guest house.

The rebel leader was first reportedly apprehended by Bangladeshi agents in September 2010. He was then arrested by the Assam police and charged by the National Investigating Agency (NIA).

He was convicted of waging war against Indian Union under sections 18, 18B and 20 of the UA(P) Act and under section 121 A and 122 of the Indian Penal Code by the NIA.

His sentence was reduced because of his contributions like setting up a library, a music school for the inmates and construction of a rock garden inside the Guwahati Central Jail premises, reports said.
