Unravelling a plot

A plot to assassinate a political leader from Nagaland in New Delhi has shocked people in Nagaland and therefore, the demand to unravel the truth behind the alleged plot has been demanded by the deputy chief minister Y.Patton and leader of the opposition T.R.Zeliang. This startling revelation came after the hit-man identified as Vijay Farmana and two of his associates were nabbed by Delhi Police from Lucknow. According to the report published in The Hindustan Times, Farmana was given a sum of Rs.80 lakhs and a Ford Endeavour vehicle in the month of April, as advance to carry out the dastardly hit job. The report further discloses that as per the information from Delhi Police, Farmana is a hardened criminal who is wanted in 11 cases of murder, one rape case, another case of attempt to murder and several cases of hijacking. So far, what the report has not disclosed is the identities of those who allegedly plotted the hit job against the politician from Nagaland. The word of a hardened criminal involved in several criminal cases cannot be taken on face value. Therefore, the onus lies entirely with the Delhi Police to clear the doubts and misgivings about links between the hit-man and those who hatched the plot. The entire matter definitely requires a thorough probe in order to expose the truth. While the facts are yet to be ascertained, there are also opinions being heard regarding the matter. It is opined that perhaps the alleged plot could be personal and not linked to any political motive. However, this can only be known if the name of the would-be victim is revealed. In this regard, the Delhi Police will have to obtain a confession from the hit-man. Also, it is expected that the identity of the person(s) who gave the money and vehicle be ascertained and made known. If these two are established then, the dots can be connected. If the statement published is established, then the state government had to take the call. The issue of hit-man hired to kill a politician from Nagaland could be wrongly perceived in a way where people of other states would tend to believe that state politics has reached such a new low. On the other hand, during the recent times, there have been a number of criminal cases registered with police of other states involving persons from Nagaland. Be it the arms license scam, sale of stolen vehicles or smuggling of contraband items. This is over and above the recent exposes involving massage parlour that hide the sexual exploitation of many girls who have been duped with offers of tempting salaries to work call centres or as hotel staff or the trafficking of minors who end up in so-called children’s homes in various parts of the country. Of course, within the state corruption and extortion are also issues against which there has been huge public outcry and rallies. These are indeed cause for serious concern since it shows the state in bad light. The state government should immediately take up the newspaper report with the Delhi Police and seek immediate answers about the alleged plot and if found to be baseless, then the Delhi Police should issue a statement to clarify the matter.
