Defending champions Vanguard FC got off to a winning start at the state level Capt. (Late) N. Kenguruse (MVC) memorial football tournament organized by 9th Assam Rifles. In the opening match at Kohima local ground on Monday, Vanguard FC defeated Ninezone Peren football team 5-0. 

Rhitso Mero opened the scoring for Vanguard FC in the 6th minute while the second goal was scored by Yhunshalo Kemp in the 21th minute. Five minutes later, Yhunshalo found the net again to make it 3-0. 

After the lemon break, Vekhruto Resu scored the fourth goal in the 46th minute, while the fifth goal was scored to by Nyithong Magh in the 58th minute. 

Altogether 22 teams are participating in the tournament. The final would be played on September 22 at Secretariat Plaza, Kohima.

The champions of the tournament will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1.70 lakh, the runner-up will get Rs. 80,000 while the semi-finalists will get Rs. 25,000 each. There will also be prizes for golden boot, golden glove and most valuable player.

Earlier, Major General Pradeep C. Nair YSM, HQ IGAR North said that the tournament was organized in honour of Captain (late) N.Kenguruse MVC who sacrificed his life for the nation on June 28, 1999 in Kargil War. The tournament, besides promoting football, will also provide a platform for the youth in the state, said Nair. 

Neisielie Kenguruse, father of the late captain also addressed the gathering. 

The programme was attended by advisor of youth resources and sports, Er. Zale Neikha, Kohima DC, Kohima SP, rank and files of Assam Rifles, students of various schools and football lovers.
