What’s so amazing about the Bethlehem Baby?

Every human being is born, first as a baby. With few exceptions, all babies come heralded, and received with open arms. But as innocent, and mild and gentle they are at this formative stage of their lives, babies do not go much beyond the gleeful, rapturous joy and adulation their parents shower on them. But for baby Jesus, a lot of things were different; he was much more than a normal baby. We must understand this crucial significance at this time when we celebrate his birth – the beautiful Christmas season!

1. Much before his epochal birth, many momentous events had transpired for us to label his birth as extra-ordinary:
a. Long before his birth, the prophets of Israel had announced his coming (Is. 7:14, Mic. 5:2)
b. Prior to his miraculous birth, his never-ending kingdom had been foretold (Isa. 9:6; Mat. 2:6; Lk. 1:32-33)
c. Before his birth, his role as the Savior of human-kind was heralded (Mat. 1:21)
2. Before and during his birth, the Holy Spirit and angels had worked great wonders:
a. It was through the power of the Spirit that Mary conceived the baby Jesus (Mat. 1:18; Lk. 1:35
b. At various stages, the angels had descended on earth to testify about the birth to come (Mat. 1:20; Lk. 1:28; 2:8-14)
3. Jesus’ birth did not happen in promising circumstances:
a. Jesus was born in a lowly stable (Lk. 2:7); he made himself of no repute
b. Jesus’ birth elicited great jealousy from the reigning monarch of the day. Herod tried hard to have Jesus killed; Joseph and Mary had to run to Egypt (Mat. 2:14)
4. Against all odds, the baby Jesus came out unscathed; come the right time, he would bless the world immeasurably. The baby Jesus had these rich, unparalleled attestations:
a. The baby who was born on Christmas day had existed with God from the beginning (Jn. 1:1-2); even today, as he was in the past, he is Immanuel-God with us
b. Along with (baby) Jesus, God had created the world and all in it (Jn. 1:3)
c. Resident in the baby Jesus was the source of abundant life (Jn. 1:4a).
d. The life inherent in Jesus illuminates the darkness resident in every human being (Jn. 1:4b)
5. There is rich treasure to glean from the above quick preview of this wonder baby – Jesus!
1. In Jesus’ humble birth, let us draw the significant lesson that small beginnings do pay rich dividends. Like Jesus, our humility is the one way to draw people to God
2. The baby Jesus has immense power to bequeath us life
immortal, and abundant. After all, he came to save us from our sins and free us from all kinds of bondage. This is good news nowhere else available
3.  The life resident in Jesus has power to dispel the darkness in any life; truly, Jesus is the Light of the world!
May we celebrate Christmas with this tapestry of meanings embedded richly in our hearts and minds.
