Wimbledon: Cibulkova, Ostapenko reach qtrs

Dominika Cibulkova shrugged off a furious line call controversy to power into the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-1 rout of Taiwanese giant-killer Hsieh Su-Wei on Monday.
Cibulkova was furious when Hsieh successfully persuaded the umpire to replay a point that was initially called in the Slovakian’s favour and would have given her three set points in the opening set. But the 29-year-old challenged her anger to crush Hsieh.
Cibulkova is ranked 33rd in the world and controversially missed out on being seeded at Wimbledon when tournament officially moved up seven-time champion Serena Williams into the seedings despite the American being ranked outside the top 150 following her maternity leave.
Although Cibulkova complained about the decision, the former Australian Open finalist has refocused well enough to make her third Wimbledon quarter-final.
Cibulkova will now face Latvian 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, for a place in the semi-finals.
Earlier, Ostapenko dismissed Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 7-6(4), 6-0.
Ostapenko turned around a near-disastrous opening set to advance into quarterfinal in one hour and 18 minutes.
Sasnovich arguably caused the biggest upset of the tournament when she stunned two-time champion Petra Kvitova in the first round. Finalist at the Brisbane International back in January, the Belarusian enjoyed a thunderous start on No.3 Court, twice leading by a double break at 3-0 and 5-2. Ostapenko caught fire from there, winning eight points in a row and edging through the inevitable tie-break.
The second set was more of the same from Ostapenko, who rarely dropped her level as winners freely flowed from her racquet to race ahead a triple break advantage of her own, serving out her spot in the last eight.
Meanwhile, Karolina Pliskova was dumped out to complete a clean sweep of early exits for the top 10 seeds. The seventh seed from the Czech Republic was the only player from the top 10 in the women’s draw to make it into the second week.
However, she only lasted until Monday lunchtime, going down 6-3 7-6 (7/1) to Dutch 20th seed Kiki Bertens.
