The 4th edition of Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo tournament got underway in Imphal’s Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest existing polo ground on Thursday.

Four foreign countries - USA, Kenya, Canada and Argentina – are participating apart from two domestic teams – IPA (India) and IPA (Manipur) – in the tournament. The tournament is hosted by Manipur tourism department in association with All Manipur Polo Association (AMPA) and Huntre Equine.

The five-day series will continue till January 21, the day on which Manipur will celebrate its Statehood Day.

In the inaugural match, Team Canada beat IPA (India). 

State consumer affairs, food and public distribution (CAF & PD) minister Karam Shyam inaugurated the tournament 

Speaking on the occasion, the minister urged upon AMPA to encourage more female participation in the game of polo. 

Appreciating Manipuri women for their ability to work hard and excel in diverse fields including social issues, the minister said that the state government will extend support and give priority on any matters related to public interest.

AMPA president Dr K Saratchandra Singh said that the association was looking forward to have more women polo players in Manipur with plans to impart training to them.
