Workshop on conserving aquatic resources

 A workshop on conservation of aquatic resources-&-release of fingerlings (ranching) funded under RKVY was held on September 1 at the Woods Doyang Reservoir. The workshop was organised by District Angler's Wokha Nagaland (DAWN) in collaboration with Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, government of Nagaland.  

According to a press release from DAWN, senior PS to deputy chief minister, Hachio Patton expressed his willingness to play a pro active role in channelling the grievances of the fishing community and for the development of Doyang as a tourist destination. 

The resource persons led by Sentinaro, DFO Wokha & her colleagues sensitized the gathering on sustainable fishing and the adverse effects of using dynamites and chemicals in Doyang.

Further, village council leaders and members of the fishing community expressed their unflinching support & resolve to impose strictly the ban of dynamites for sustainable fishing and urged the department of Fisheries and the government to look out for the welfare of the community.

DAWN also asked the government to pass legislation with community participation for the ban of dynamites and chemicals in river bodies in Nagaland, particularly in Doyang, to foster sustainable fishing. It further expressed immense gratitude to Kevisa Kense director of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, and DFO Wokha for releasing a truck load of fingerlings in the reservoir.

Echungbemo Erui, EAC Englan on behalf of Wokha district administration, village council of all the neighbouring villages and the fishing community numbering 60 attended the workshop. The program was chaired by K.N Mhonthung Lotha, president (DAWN).
