Three-day state level workshop on gender budgeting for gender equality in rural areas organized by Nagaland National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, North Eastern Regional Center (NIRD & PR-NERC) in collaboration with the women’s studies center (WSC) along with department of Education, Nagaland University and sponsored by ministry of Women & Child Development, India, got underway at ladies common room, Meriema campus Nagaland University on Wednesday.  

Advisor IPR, SCERT & Village Guards, Toshi Wungtung in his inaugural address as special guest said that in any democratic country like India, as long as they have voting rights, everyone was equal before law. He said both men and women share the equal responsibility to come forward in participating and raising opinions and concern in the democratic country. Advisor stressed the need of addressing the gender issue in the state and political empowerment for women as part of the policy formulating.  

He said culturally, philosophically and spiritually women were no less, however in the socio-economic status there may be differences in policy approach. He opined that gender budgeting should be sustainable in approach while regulating and formulating various policies in the country and society due to different cultures and social stratification of different places.

Advisor said that although Nagaland government had passed a resolution that every department must go into gender budgeting, however it was yet to be practically implemented. He also informed that there were various schemes in different government departments for the upliftment of women. He hoped this workshop would bring a sustainable approach towards empowering women on gender budgeting for an equal and healthy society.

Resource persons for the workshop were associate prof NIRD & PR-NERC Dr. Jayanta Choudhury, entrepreneur, Benjamin Chishi, professor NU, Buno Liegise, professor NU, Dr Lungsang Zeliang, secretary NPSC, Kevekha Kevin Zehol, MD (Psychiatry) P. Ngully, advocate Joshua Sheqi, Dr. Khotsole Khieya, Dr. Ratan Kaurinta, asst. district programme manager NSRLM DMMU Kohima, Kenivole Richa, and principal JCC Dr. Asakho Hibo. 

Panelists for discussion were Dr. Anungla, prof. Rosemary Dzuvichu, Dr. Asakho Hibo, Dr. Rukhono Iralu and Gracy Aye SRCW.  

Earlier, programme was chaired by Narola Chuba, welcome address by professor NU, Buno Liegise. Vice chancellor NU, Prof. Pardeshi Lal was the guest of honour and key note address was delivered by associate prof. NIRD & PR- NERC Dr. Jayanta Choudhury. 

Government officials, academicians, scholars, civil societies, NGOs and faculty members are participating in the three-day workshop. The workshop  is sponsored by ministry of Women & Child Development, India and organized by Nagaland National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, North Eastern Regional Center (NIRD & PR- NERC) in collaboration with the women’s studies center along with department of Education, NU.
