World Toilet Day observed in Kohima

Nagaland celebrated “World Toilet Day” under the theme, “When Nature Calls” at PHED directorate office along with the rest of the world on November 19, graced by Maongwati Aier, commissioner & secretary, PHED. 

A press release from WSSO, PHED LEC consultant, Adi Nakhro stated that Maongwati in his speech mentioned that in 2014, India’s rural sanitation coverage was only 39% but by November 2018 the coverage was about 93%. He added that Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) was a game changer and because of good sanitation practices it helped address the malnutrition issue and reduce diarrheal deaths in the country. So far 85 million toilets have been built by households in India, where 4,50,000 villages out of 6 lakh villages were now Open Defication Free (ODF) and out of 699 districts 460 districts are ODF in India, he added.

World Toilet Day at Samziuram village

World Toilet Day (WTD) was observed at Samziuram village, Peren on November 19. 

A press release from PHED Peren stated that a program was organized by WSSO, PHED, Peren and sponsored by Swachh Bharat Mission, PHED, Kohima. Highlights and introduction of twin pit latrine technology was given by Binsaniu, IEC consultant, WSSO, PHED, Peren. 

Hingtung Chawang, Hd.GB-&-WATSAN chairman, also spoke on behalf of the WATSAN committee, where he called upon the villagers to be united in working towards a better and cleaner environment. 

He also told them to maintain clean and hygienic latrines and also learn to adopt sustainable practices of sanitation. The invocation prayer was said by pastor, R. K Zendai, Rongmai Baptist Church, Samziuram village.
