An elderly person, who was falsely tested as positive for COVID-19, passed away on Friday due to asthma in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district, a family member said on Saturday.

81- year-old Philing Sohpoh of Umsamlem village, had been admitted in Dr. H Gordon Robert’s Hospital in Shillong early this month with complaints related to breathing.

“He passed away on Friday due to Asthma after he was discharged from hospital on our request on June 22,” Sohpoh’s son Sikhaius Mawlong said.

His funeral service was held on Saturday.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on June 9 declared that the elderly man had tested positive for COVID-19 after his samples were collected.

However, the State Medical Expert Committee later clarified that it was a “false positive”, false result, attributable to one percent error in the testing kit, a rare case.
