‘Litter free Kohima city’ campaign begins

Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL) and Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) have initiated a “litter free Kohima city” campaign in an effort to make the city clean and have urged citizens to join the movement.

In a press release, KSCDL said in order to make Kohima a “litter free city”, an intensive cleaning of the main highway began on June 4 for which the pilot location from TCP Jn to North PS Junction for the first week was identified.

KMC has also notified that depositing of waste in the council’s collection points along the main city highway would be strictly maintained before 6 a.m. and after 6 p.m. while daytime hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.was to be strictly observed as “no litter, no garbage” hours.

The council has warned that fines may be imposed on violators - fines have been fixed at Rs 500, Rs.2000 and cancellation of trade license for first, second and third offence respectively for traders and Rs 200, Rs 500 and Rs 1000 for first, second and third offence respectively for individuals.

 KSCDL and KMC has requested customers and pedestrians not to litter but to use the dustbins provided by each shop and the smaller dustbins placed along the pavements and footpaths.  Traders and business establishments have been asked to deposit the waste at the designated KMC waste collection points only before 6a.m. and after 6 p.m., the same would be enforced by the KMC Inspectors and assisted by the Kohima Smart CCTV cameras. 

Further, citizens have been requested not to throw waste out of moving cars but to find a dustbin or take the waste home for disposal.

Meanwhile, ward sanitation committees have been requested to create awareness and monitor the waste deposit timings in their respective jurisdictions.
