Police personnel manning New Field Check Gate Thursday seized at least 16 live piglets, which were being smuggled in a pick-up truck, and arrested one person. The weight of piglets (2-4 month old) ranged from 8-15 kg.

According to sources, the accused identified as one Kawidingoubo (30) of New Jalukie, Peren was arrested while he was attempting to transport the piglets from Assam to New Jalukie village. A case has been registered with the West Police Station for further investigation.

District veterinary hospital, Dimapur I/C, Dr. Zubemo Humtsoe, told Nagaland Post that the seized piglets were handed to the chief veterinary office. He said that serum samples would be collected and sent to laboratory for confirmation of classical swine fever. The seized piglets have been quarantined at District Veterinary Hospital Dimapur for further investigation.

Ban lifted partially: The state government recently decided to partially lift ban imposed on the import of pigs. In a notification, chief secretary Temjen Toy said that the ban was partially lifted for import of healthy and certified pigs from Punjab and Haryana, except Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and the states having cases of African Swine Fever.
