77 wrestlers to vie for Open NWA title

A total of 77 Naga wrestlers including one each from non-wrestling community Ao and Lotha tribes have registered for the upcoming 13th Open Naga Wrestling Championship scheduled to be held on April 9 at Khuochiezie (local ground), Kohima.

This was announced by Naga Wrestling Association (NWA) president,Dr.HiabeZeliang during a presser at KMK building, here, Monday.

Dr.Hiabe informed that Yimküm Sashi weighing 78 Kgs from Nokpu village under Mokokchung and Thechamo N Murry weighing 72 Kgs from Wokha village have confirmed their participation in the upcoming championship.

He further disclosed that a total of 77 wrestlers had registered  for the championship including 57 wrestlers for below 80 kg and 20 heavyweights for above 80 kg. 

As informed earlier quarter finalists in both the categories would automatically qualify for the ultimate championship round which would be held simultaneously. 

NWA members also announced that last date for submission of forms had been extended to April 6  for NWA wrestling units while the same has been extended indefinitely for non-wrestling communities. Interested participants from non-wrestling communities have been encouraged and invited to seize this opportunity.

For the first time for NWA would be introducing two category system for above-80 kg and below-80kg for the wrestlers. Cash prizes for each categories are Rs 50,000, Rs. 30,000, 20,000, and 15,000 for first, second, third and fourth respectively. While for the ultimate championship title, the first prize is set at a staggering Rs 1.7 lakh, followed by Rs. 1.2 lakh, Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 70,000 for the second, third and fourth position holders respectively.

Some of the prominent wrestlers taking part includes NWA open reigning champion Menuosetuo Yiese, NWA reigning champion Venuzo Dawhuo, former Open NWA champion Dzieselatuo Keretsü, former Zeliang champion Nlumrai Hegwang and former NWA champion Vechita Khesoh. 

NWA in collaboration with Nagaland Olympic Association will be introducing pay per view for spectators unable to attend the championship. Interested individuals can procure PPV access at for a price of Rs. 150 per device. 

Advisor Youth Resources and Sports Er. Zale Neikha and minister of Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue & Parliamentary Affairs,NeibaKronu, will be the guest and special guest respectively during the inaugural programme. 

The event is being hosted by Chakhesang Wrestling Association while ground management would be undertaken by Chakhesang Christian Revival Churches Youth Association. 

Meanwhile, NWA has informed registered wrestlers to be present for weighing in on April 8 from 12 pm to 3 pm at the venue followed by a briefing session for the championship officials at 2 pm on the same day.

On the sidelines of the presser, ground management team has informed that muodi, food packs and fast-foods would be made available including a lucky draw while a mega LCD screen would be made available at the venue for better viewing experience for the spectators.
