The annual A. Kevichusa citizenship award 2020 instituted to foster citizens working for common good was awarded to state commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Diethono Nakhro at RCEMPA, Monday.

Thanking the Kevichusa Foundation for the award, Nakhro opined that disability does not necessarily mean poverty, but people with disabilities were more likely to face poverty due to discrimination, limited access to education, employment and lack of inclusion in livelihood and other social programmes.

While a lot of changes have been happening in recent times with better disability awareness, perceptible positive changes in attitudes and with government more receptive and proactive, Nakhro however, lamented that PWDs continue to face nearly insurmountable barriers in the most basic places. Nakhro said that so much more needed to be done for Nagaland to become truly inclusive and enabling.

Earlier, announcing the recipient, associate professor and head of department Tenyidie, Dr. Mimi Kevichusa Ezung appraised that Nakhro was the first disability self-advocate of disability in the state and was a member of the National Committee on Rights of PWDs since 2013 and Nagaland partner to the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People since 2013. She said Nakhro was the Nagaland partner to the National Disability Network since 2014 and advisor to the Nagaland State Disability Forum since 2015 and the state election icon for PwDs from 2017-2020. She further said that Nakhro has been appointed state commissioner for PWDs in the year 2019 and in 2015 awarded the NCPEDP Lemontree Helen Keller Award in the category “role model person with disability”. Ezung said that Nakhro was also awarded the Classic Award in recognition of her work to empower PWDs in 2019. Baptist Church Khonoma, pastor Rev. Tsolie Chase and retired associate professor Kohima College, Dr. Kevilenuo Sakhrie handed over the award to Nakhro consisting of certificate, medallion and cash prize of Rs. 3 lakhs.

Speaker and trainer RZIM Life Focus Society, Dr. Kethoser Kevichusa chaired the programme and delivered vote of thanks.
