A pyrrhic impeachment

Donald Trump’s political future suffered a grave blow on January 13,2021 after the House impeached him for a second time, an unprecedented rebuke that may result in the White House doors being forever shut to him. It was a moment to savour for house speaker Nancy Pelosi, who represents those who has a pathological hatred for Trump. Nancy should remember her February 4,2020 humiliation, when Trump abruptly turned away when she extended her hand for a handshake. Nancy and Trump are from two extreme ideologies and have no love lost for each other. For the record, under Pelosi’s leadership, the House of Representatives impeached President Donald Trump, first on December 18, 2019, and again on January 13, 2021. Donald Trump will be remembered for being the most controversial US president ever. The backlash against Trump in the wake of the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol has been swift, creating an unprecedented test of the vice-like grip he’s held on his party since his 2016 political ascendance. The Capitol riot the president was accused of inciting sparked a wave of reactions such as the Trump’s banishment from Twitter, a 24-hour suspension by Facebook, having his Youtube taken off and also prompted corporate leaders to suspend donations to Republicans. In office, Trump made more enemies than friends as he was uncompromising and did cared little for diplomacy and mending fences. He forcefully attacked the liberal elites in politics, the media and academia who favored the secular over the sacred, the global over the local, the urban over the rural, the educated over the uneducated, and burgeoning minorities over the declining white majority. Of all, perhaps, the liberal media that is all over the place, was Trump’s archenemy. The media contributed hugely to the anti-Trump feeling across America. The majority liberal media mischievously accused Trump of being anti-Muslim when he suspended travel to and from countries which promote terror attacks on the US. His attempt to stem the tide of illegal immigration, especially from across the border with Mexico, earned him the ire of Democrats. He vowed to punish American companies who set up manufacturing units in China but reward those who returned back. He fulfilled the promise to shift the American embassy to Jerusalem which no president did. He promoted the American middle class business and the conservative God-centric values, opposed same sex marriage etc. These made him the perfect enemy of a left-liberal Democratic party. Many Democrats consider him to be a megalomaniac, a xenophobe, a homophobe, an Islamophobe, a racist, and a misogynist. What is however, interesting and intriguing about Democratic hatred for Trump is that there is really no ideological basis for it. It is no secret that Democrats, whether they call themselves liberals, leftists, progressives, Democratic socialists, or just plain socialists, hate Donald Trump. While condemning Trump , Democrats ignore the fact that they have never allowed him to govern in peace. Even on his inauguration day, seventy House Democrats boycotted his inauguration while some of them declared Trump to be an “illegitimate president.” They incited crowds to violent protests nationwide against Trump but when he urged crowds to peacefully protest, it was termed as insurrection. Donald Trump will certainly go down in history as the president who exposed the underbelly of American mainstream politics and the claim of being the world’s oldest democracy.
