Congress may come to power in Manipur, said AICC Manipur in-charge Bhakta Charan Das, who arrived in Imphal on Wednesday to take stock of the latest development within the state unit of the party.

Das arrived here on Wednesday forenoon amid the reported internal crisis within the MPCC arising out of resignation of its incumbent president Govindas Konthou-jam.

Talking to reporters at Imphal airport, Das said that so far the resignation tender by Govindas was not accepted and added that AICC took the matter seriously.

He said that his visit was in connection with the preparedness of the party for the upcoming elections to the state Assembly which is likely to come up by February-March next year.

“There is no question of disagreement or crisis within the MPCC. I am here to dis-cuss matters related to election preparedness of the party and party organization,” he said

Das, however, said that ahead of the elections, there may come up a political change in the July 26, the day fixed by the Supreme Court of India for the pro-nouncement of its verdict over the disqualification of 12 MLAs of the ruling BJP and its coalition partners.

The apex court listed the plea related seeking disqualification of 12 MLAs – eight BJP MLAs, three NPF and an independent –for July 26.

“We are waiting for the verdict of the apex court on the disqualification of the 12 MLAs. Who know Congress forms the next government after the honourable court’s verdict,” he said.

The AICC Manipur in-charge said that the fate of the BJP-led coalition government will be decided by the verdict of the apex court.

Soon after his arrival at Imphal, Das convened a series of meetings with the mem-bers of the MPCC, particularly with senior leaders of the party.

He also called on with Congress legislators one by one separately including Con-gress legislator party leader and former chief minister O Ibobi Singh and CWC member Gaikhangam, sources said.

Das also held a meeting with office bearers of the MPCC and party’s frontal organi-zations like Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, Seva Dal and NSUI in the evening.

A highly reliable source said that the meetings also discussed on the latest devel-opment in the state unit of the party after Govindas tendered his resignation as MPCC president.

The party is likely to take a final decision regarding the appointment of new presi-dent by July 22 after a meeting between Das and members of the MPCC at 11 am.

After the series of meetings, senior MPCC leader and MLA K Meghachandra said that a final decision regarding appointment of the new president of the MPCC was likely after another round of meeting to be convened tomorrow.
