Bale hat-trick keeps Spurs’ EPL top four hopes alive

Gareth Bale scored a superb hat-trick as Tottenham thumped Sheffield United 4-0 on Sunday night, keeping Spurs’ faint hopes of a Premier League top-four finish alive for now.

Bale struck one goal in the first half and two more after the break while Heung-min Son added another as Spurs made light work of the Blades, with Ryan Mason rewarded for an attacking lineup which also featured Dele Alli.
With Chelsea beating Fulham 2-0 on Saturday, Spurs knew that anything less than a win against the League’s bottom club would surely end their Champions League qualification ambitions.
Tottenham dominated the opening 35 minutes and took the lead nine minutes before the break through Bale.
Spurs were on the wrong end of two VAR calls early in the second half: John Fleck remained on the pitch despite an apparent stamp on Giovani Lo Celso’s head, while Heung-min Son saw a fine goal ruled out for a marginal offside.
Still, Spurs held their nerve and Bale doubled their lead on the hour-mark: Son won possession off a Blades corner and released Bale into acres of space, with the Welshman blasting him for his 50th Premier League goal. There was more to come from Bale with Aurier once again the provider: the right-back cut in from the flank and teed up the ball perfectly for Bale to flash in a controlled finish from 25 yards out to complete his hat-trick.
The win sends Spurs fifth before West Ham’s trip to Burnley on Monday, and leaves Mason’s men five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with four games to go.
