KAUSHIK WON HIS PRE-QUARTERFINAL BOUT 5-0 WHILE HUSAMUDDIN WON  4-1

World Championships bronze medallist Manish Kaushik made an impressive comeback in the ring as he outpunched Spanish opponent Raddouane Ammari 5-0 on the opening day of the Boxam International Tournament to enter the quarter-finals in the 63-kg light welterweight category in Castellon, Spain.

Another Indian who was in action on Day 1 on Tuesday, Mohammed Husamuddin (57 kg) also made his way into the quarter-finals with a comfortable 4-1 scoreline against local boy Juan Manuel Torres.

Haryana boxer Kaushik, 25, couldn’t compete in the ring since Asian Olympic Qualifiers held in March last year due to injuries and is making a return after more than a year’s break. He will take on two-time ASBC Asian Boxing Championships silver medallist Kazakhstan boxer Sufiullin Zakir on Thursday while Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Husamuddin will face Italy’s Simone Spada. Zakir beat Abdelhaq Nadir of Morocco 3-1 in the preliminary round match.

The second day of the tournament will see six Indian women boxers taking part. This includes six-time world champion Mary Kom (51 kg), Jasmine and Manisha Moun (57 kg), Simranjit Kaur (60 kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) and Pooja Rani (75 kg) competing in the quarter-finals.

A 14-member Indian contingent (eight men and six women), including nine Olympic qualified and other top boxers, is taking part in the 35th edition of the tournament where boxers from 17 countries, including top boxing nations like Russia, USA, Italy, Kazakhstan and Spain, are participating.

PTI adds: Mary Kom, competing for the first time since qualifying for the Olympics last year, was scheduled to take on Italian Giordana Sorrentino in her opening bout later on Wednesday.

Panghal (52kg), who won a gold medal at the Cologne World Cup in Germany  in December last year, will be facing local favourite Gabriel Escobar in his quarterfinal clash after getting an opening-round bye. 

Vikas Krishan (69kg), another strong medal contender for Tokyo, is also in the quarters after getting a bye and will take on Vincenzo Mangiacapre of Italy. 

Swiss Open: Srikanth, Sourabh through, Prannoy out 

Basel, Mar 3 (IANS): India’s Kidambi Srikanth and Sourabh Verma on Wednesday progressed to the second round of the Swiss Open Super 300 badminton tournament here while H.S. Prannoy bowed out after a three-game defeat to Netherland’s Mark Caljouw. Sourabh’s brother Sameer Verma was also knocked in the first round after losing to Srikanth 21-17, 18-21, 11-21 in a match that lasted an hour and one minute. Sourabh, meanwhile, beat Switzerland’s Christian Kirchmayr 21-19, 21-18 in 43 minutes.
Prannoy lost to Caljouw 19-21, 21-9, 17-21 in a match that lasted an hour and two minutes. The second day of the Swiss Open sees India’s top singles and doubles players in action. Reigning world champion P.V. Sindhu kicks off her tournament later in the day with a match against Turkish world no. 29 Neslihan Yigit while 2012 Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal faces Thailand’s Phittayapom Chaiwan.
Second-seeded doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty play Scottish twin brothers Christopher and Matthew Grimley.
Mixed doubles pair Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy stunned Indonesian second seeded pair Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja on Tuesday. 
Rankireddy and Ashwini, ranked 19 on the world standings, secured a 21-18, 21-10 win over the world no. 8 pair to advance to the second round. They will now face Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari, who beat Dutch pair Tiles van der Lecq and Deboa Jille 21-13, 21-15.
