Convening Committee for Unification, a Diphu based organization has called for ten hours Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao shutdown (bandh) from 5.00 am to 3.00 pm on February 13

The decision was announced in a press meet held at Diphu Press Club office on Friday, the CCU has expressed their opposition against the Assam Cabinet’s decision of renaming the Hills Areas Department.

It may be mentioned that the State Cabinet recently made a decision to constitute Sixth Schedule Areas Department and purge the existing Hill Areas Department.

The organization has stated that the move of the government is to “disrupt the welfare of the hill districts of Assam”. CCU has condemned the decision and has described the move as “anti-hill tribe attitude of a section of the Assamese leaders and the state government”. On the other hand the CCU has stated that “there’s no objection with regards to extension of the provision to other tribal areas of Assam.”

CCU said it is quite skeptical about the Cabinet’s decision to bring the two categories of tribes of Assam within the ambit of one department. In the press statement, CCU spokesperson has appealed to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to reconsider its decision. The organization has appealed to the incumbent Hill Areas Development Minister, Sum Ronghang and the four Members of Legislative Assembly elected from KarbiAnglong, West KarbiAnglong and Dima Hasao autonomous district to oppose the government move.

CCU has cautioned the government that if it doesn’t reassess its resolution instantly, they will resort to full-scale agitation.
