Christmas

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given”. The first clause speaks of his humanity, the second of his deity.

The government will be upon his shoulder -- he will reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

His name will be called wonderful -- and speaks of his person and work.

Counsellor -- His wisdom in government.

Mighty God -- The omnipotent, supreme ruler.

Everlasting Father -- The father of eternity. Eternal himself, he confers eternal life on those who believe in him.

Prince of peace -- The one who will at last bring peace to this troubled world.

His government will be far flung, peaceful, and endless. Sitting upon the throne of David, he will rule with judgement and justice.

When Christ was born, three different group of people searched Christ; the shepherds, the wise man, and the King Herod.

Shepherds -- The first intimation of this unique birth was not given to the religious and worldly leaders in Jerusalem, but to contemplative shepherds in Judian hillsides. Humble men who were faithful at their regular work. When the poor shepherds heard the announcement from the Angels, they answered the call and hurriedly moved to Bethlehem. They firmly believed the word of the Angels. With their strong and simple faith they moved and found Jesus.

Wise man from the East -- It was the star in the East that somehow made them aware of the birth of the King of kings whom they came to worship. Possibly they were familiar with prophecies concerning the Messiah’s arrival. It seems more probable that, the knowledge was communicated to them supernaturally. Various scientific explanations have been offered to account for the star. Some say, for instance, that it was a conjunction of planets. But the course of this star was highly irregular; it went before the wise men, leading them from Jerusalem to the house where Jesus was living and then it stopped. Infact, it was so unusual that it can only be accounted for as a miracle. They were the most intellectual people in the world, but something went wrong. Forgetting the star that leaded them, they expected the King of the Jews in Herod Palace. They were pre-occupied by their worldly intellectuals, understanding and expectation, that is why they searched Christ in the wrong place. They missed the Lord at the first instance. Like those wise men, today many Christians, miss Christ, because we search in the wrong places, such as parties, picnic, feast and indulging in excess. On the contrary, we actually should be searching for Christ in our heart during solemn and auspicious time.

The King Herod -- When Herod the King heard that a baby had been born who was to be King of the Jews, he was troubled. Herod assembled the Jewish religious leaders to find out where the Christ was to be born. These priests and scribes promptly quoted and identified Bethlehem of Judea as the King’s birthplace. King Herod secretly called the wise men to determine what time the star first appeared. This secrecy betrayed his sadistic motive. The information will be required to achieve his malevolent intention should he fail to locate the right child. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him”. The wise men however were shown an epiphany by god. They were divinely warned in a dream not to return to the evil king Herod. They accordingly returned to their homes following another route.

Infact King Herod also wanted to see the child, but with a different motive. Not to worship but to kill. For the whole world it was a time for celebrating the first coming of Christ our saviour, but for King Herod, he wanted to deny the world of an ancient prophecy. A prophecy that will usher the world into a new era of peace, prosperity and happiness. Like King Herod, many Christians in today’s time tend to forget the very essence of Christmas. They end up celebrating Christmas with wrong motives and make Christmas a time of spiritual death rather than spiritual awakening. Of this we may be certain, if we fail to find Christ in this season of joyous faith, we shall have little more than a synthetic Christmas. What a tragedy to exchange cards, gifts and greetings, but not to know the radiance of stardust! In this troublesome world, during this season as a responsible Christians or good believer, where will you stand for Christ? As good Christians, we need to exhibit and witness to the world. How far we are sincere and faithful enough for Christ? Let us choose ourselves and show to the people that we are his faithful followers.

He desires our adoration and worship. Heaven’s “hall of fame” is filled with the names of obscure people like the one leper who returned to thank God while nine never bothered. It will be filled with the names of people who so touched the heart and mind of God. We religiously seek the hand of God, but we know nothing about seeking the face of God and crying out “I just want you”.

In closing, during this auspicious time of joy and spiritual awakening which group of people do you want to represent?  The faith and devotion of the Shepherds who unwaveringly followed the prophecy, the three wise men who had to be  shown an epiphany to led them into the right direction or the evil king Herod with his malevolent design to deny the world of Christ our saviour.
