Amid a sharp spike in Covid-19 cases and deaths mounting, the Meghalaya government on Tuesday imposed a ten-day total lockdown from 8 pm of May 19 in its worst-hit East Khasi Hills district to break the transmission chain.

“The government has decided that from tomorrow (Wednesday) 8 pm of May 19 to 5 am of May 31 w will impose a total lockdown in East Khasi Hills district,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong announced after the review meeting chaired by chief minister Conrad Sangma.

On the other hand, Sangma appealed to the citizens to remain indoors during the lockdown period.

“If you develop symptoms please isolate and call 14410 and please follow Covid Appropriate Behaviour even if you are at home. We request all citizens of East Khasi Hills and residents of Meghalaya to kindly adhere and strictly follow the regulations issued by the Government and the respective District Administration,” Sangma said.

The imposition of lockdown is significant in view of the continuous spike of COVID-19 infection and mounting deaths toll in the East Khasi Hills that included the State capital Shillong, which is witnessing an unprecedented spike for the last fortnight.

On Tuesday, the state reported 906 cases, the highest single-day spike since the onset of the pandemic and also 19 deaths in the past 24 hours.
