Opposition Congress on Thursday came down heavily on the BJP-led coalition government in Manipur, accusing it of “mismanagement of the Covid situation” in the state.

AICC Manipur in-charge, Bhakta Charan Das, camping in Imphal to take stock of the organizational matter of the state unit of the party, expressed his concerned over the alarming COVID-19 situation in the state.

Addressing a news conference at Imphal Congress Bhavan, Das observed that daily surge of infection around 1000 and 10 to 15 deaths daily due to the pandemic in a small state like Manipur having population around 30 lakh was not a matter to be taken lightly.

“It is due to the mismanagement on the part of the state government,” he said.

“The BJP-led government is not taking the COVID-19 management seriously. BJP is not busy in managing the COVID-19 and serving the people, they are busy in strengthening the government, he said.

They (BJP) were indulging in all kinds of illegal activities for the survival of the government, he accused.

Das alleged that the state government was doing nothing for controlling the spread of the virus except imposing curfew and various restrictions in the name of stopping the spread of the virus.

The government was not fighting the pandemic with a definite policy. The state government has not implemented an effective policy to effectively control the spread of the virus, he added. The state lost the fight against COVID-19 under the leadership of chief minister N Biren Singh as a health minister of the state, he further said.

Asserting that the N Biren Singh-led government was responsible for the devastating condition of the COVID-19 in the state, Das demanded that Biren and his government must offer apology to the people of the state their COVID-19 mismanagement.

He further criticized Modi-led government at the Centre for remaining silent even though people of the state are at the limit of woes due to mismanagement of the COVID-19 crisis.

Taking up the matter of disqualification of 12 MLAs of the ruling parties for the question of holding office of profit, the AICC Manipur in-charge said that the state government does not have the legal right to appoint the 12 MLAs as parliamentary secretaries.

The 12 MLAs should also accept this and respect the constitution. They are illegally in the government and they should resign from being MLAs of the state Assembly, he demanded.

It may be mentioned that the Supreme Court of India had fixed July 26 for the announcement of judgment in the case seeking disqualification of the BJP MLAs for holding the office of profit.

On queries from the reporters over the organizational matter of the party in the state, he said that new president of the MPCC will be completed within seven days, he said.

The news conference was attended by former chief minister O Ibobi Singh, CWC member Gaikhangam and sitting MLAs of the party apart from leaders of the MPCC.
