Drug dealer arrested with opium worth Rs 2.53 crore in Manipur

A man allegedly engaged in inter-state illegal drug transportation was arrested with 84.45kg of opium and Rs 19.85 lakh in cash by police in Manipur.

The seized opium is valued at around Rs 2.53 crore in the international market as the police estimated the cost of a kg of opium at Rs three lakh in the international market.

The police said that the alleged drug dealer, Sandeep Limbu (31) son of Manbir Limbu of Erang Part -1 of Senapati’s Dhoreghari village was arrested last (Friday) night from Shantipur village of Kanglatombi in Imphal West district where he stayed at a rented house. Imphal West SP K Meghachandra told reporters today that Sandeep Limbu was arrested after 22 packets of opium wrapped with black colour polythene were found during a check to an EECO Van (with no registration number) parked in his rented house around 8.30 pm on Friday.

The police raided the house and the vehicle only after the suspected drug dealer who defied police challenge ran inside the house. The police found 22 packets of opium concealing in two gunny bags containing some grocery items like rice, dal and vegetables in the Van. During spot interrogation, the police identified the person as Premjit at Sekmai Bazar on the previous day (April 2) for onward delivery to another person at Guwahati of Assam.

On the same day, he also collected cash amount of Rs 19,85,000 from another person residing in Bazar area from his rented house during further raid, the SP said.

The SP alleged that the accused person collected the opium and money on instruction of one Karan from Guwahati and he (arrested person) was planning to travel to Guwahati to deliver the item. 

The arrested person further admitted that he had earlier delivered opium to Guwahati five times.

The alleged drug dealer along with the seized items has been handed over to Sekmai police station for further investigation and illegal actions, the SP informed.
