Dimapur Sumi Students’ Union (DSSU) Wednesday informed that it conducted a surprise checking on sale of tobacco products and destroyed seized items “worth thousands of rupees”.

In a press release, DSSU general secretary N. Mugha Aye and finance secretary Holloto Yeptho stated that the “illegal seized products” were destroyed in the presence of Sumi Council Dimapur and DSSU advisors.

DSSU stated that the checking was initiated since the business establishments sold the tobacco products, which affected people’s health, beyond the fixed price despite repeated warning.

The union stated that the hiking prices on the pretext of Covid and selling the products to children below 18 years of age were illegal.

It also stated that sale and promotion of the same within 100-meter radius of educational institutions was unlawful under the COTPA, 2003.

Further, DSSU has reaffirmed against selling of daily essential commodities beyond the MRP including prices of Gutkhas which had recently seen a price hike.
