In a boost to state and regional air connectivity under UDAN scheme, Civil Aviation ministry has announced flight services from Guwahati to Dimapur and Imphal from December 7, 2019.

Sources informed Nagaland Post that Air India will be operating in these three sectors.

In August last, Union Civil Aviation minister, Hardeep Singh Puri had assured to look into Nagaland Governor, R.N. Ravi’s request to operationalize air services in these sectors, keeping in mind the regional connectivity of North Eastern states.

Ravi had also requested the minister to help early operationalization of Dimapur–Guwahati, Dimapur-Imphal and Dimapur-Dibrugarh air services under Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme.

Accordingly, the minister directed the concerned officials of the ministry and airlines and assured the Governor to begin flight services in these sectors.

As published in the August 30, 2019 editorial column of this newspaper, it was pointed out that Dimapur airport is among the oldest in the region though civil air services started operation since the mid-seventies when certain states in the region such as Mizoram, Manipur and Meghalaya were not air-linked by regular Indian Airlines service.

Air connectivity in other airports like Imphal, Jorhat, Aizawl and Dibrugarh have increased along with passenger facilities. Dimapur is not only the gate way of Nagaland but it also serves portions of upper Assam such as Karbi Anglong, Jorhat, Golaghat districts as an important railhead besides facilitating air travel for passengers from Karbi Anglong and Golaghat districts. The volume of passengers travelling by air from Dimapur has been on the rise for several years.

However air connectivity to and from Dimapur has not been commensurate with rise in passenger volume.

It also highlighted about re-introducing the twice weekly Air India flight between Delhi-Guwahati-Dimapur and back as in the past in view of the increase in passenger travelling by air and train.

Many would choose to fly from Dimapur to Guwahati or Guwahati to Dimapur. Besides, those flying to Guwahati would have the option to take connecting flights from Guwahati to Imphal, Agartala, Aizawl or Dibrugarh and vice versa.
