Gorkhas observe Balidan Diwas in Nagaland

Balidan Diwas (Martyrs’ Day) in memory of Saheed Major Durga Malla and Saheed Capt. Neikezhakuo Kenguruse and other martyrs was observed by Gorkhas in Kohima and Dimapur on August 25 respectively.

GPPK Kohima: Gorkha Public Panchayat, Kohima (GPPK) along with other Gorkha NGOs and Gorkha defence ex-servicemen observed the occasion at Gorkha public panchayat hall, Chandmari, Kohima on Tuesday evening.
A press release by Gorkha publicity committee stated that, all the advisors of the GPPK and Gaon Bura Kamal Bahadur Chettri as the special invitees during the observation led the gathering by lighting of lamps along with GPPK president Santu Thapa. Leaders of various Gorkha organisations in the state capital including the GB and ex-servicemen also paid rich floral tribute to the gallant heroes at their portrait. Significance of the day was shared by president of Indreni Club, Prem Kumar Thapa and message was delivered by GPPK president Santu Thapa.   Other members of the community within and outside the state joined the programme virtually through google connect.
DGU, GSUD: Dimapur Gorkha Union (DGU) and Gorkha Students Union Dimapur (GSUD) commemorated the day at DGU finance secretary residence. A press release by DGU stated that, Kumar Subba chairman of DGU gave a brief life history of Amar Shaheed Durga Malla. He said that the great Indian Gorkha freedom fighter Saheed Durga Malla was hanged to death by the British on August 25, 1944 for his patriotic activities. Maintaining that Gorkhas have always been at the forefront in the defence of the country, he said that Shaheed Durga Malla belongs to the front rank of Gorkha heroes martyred for the cause of country’s freedom.
