A migrant worker was killed while four others were injured after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in Manipur’s Thoubal district early Monday.
The blast took place around 1.14 am at a community hall at Khongjom Sapam Leikai. According to police, the IED was detonated through remote control.
Pankaj Mahato (21) from Khariatabad succumbed to his injuries at the Thoubal district hospital.
The injured workers- Aroop Mandal (30), Souvik Patra (18), Apoorva Mondal (25) and Rajesh Ramaanik (19) were referred to JNIMS hospital after administering first aid at Thoubal District hospital.
The workers all from West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district were engaged in construction of a water reservoir. The incident took place while they were sleeping at the makeshift camp set up at a corner of the community hall, police said.
Police suspected that the IED inside the makeshift camp have been planted by militants while the workers were sleeping. Only five workers were present in the camp when the incident happened. Soon after the blast, top officials of the Thoubal district police rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. Forensic experts of the state police department also conducted a spot enquiry. Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh strongly condemned the blast and challenged the perpetrator(s) to come out, “if they have guts, and shoot him, instead of targeting the innocent people”.
To a query from the reporters at a news conference at his secretariat, Singh termed the target to workers as an act of cowardly people.
The chief minister, then, said that the perpetrators will be booked at the earliest for the end of justice.
