Chess Olympiad Torch Relay in Imphal


The first-ever Chess Olympiad Torch Relay reached Imphal on Sunday after travelling to different parts of the country. Grandmaster Saptashi Roy reached Imphal with the torch and accorded a warm reception by leaders and members of the Manipur Chess Development Association in Imphal’s Kangla fort. The historic Torch Relay was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the IG Stadium in New Delhi on June 19.
The grandmaster handed the torch to MLA S Premchandra Singh who then handed it over to grand master to take it Kohima. Playing with the grand master will certainly boost the morale of the young budding chess players of the state, MLA S Prechandra said, in his speech at the reception function. President of the Manipur Chess Development Association Soibam Mangijao, in his presidential speech said that the torch relay will be taken to Nagaland.
Meanwhile, according to DIPR report, grand master Ankit Rajpara, arrived Dimapur on Sunday. He will proceed to Kohima on Monday to witness the Blitz tournament organised by Nagaland Chess Association to mark the 1st ever Chess Olympiad Torch Relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022.
Nagaland Chess Association has informed that there will be cash prize for open under 18 years and under 14 years category during the Blitz tournament and has extended invitation to the chess players, chess enthusiasts, parents and chess lovers.
