Contractual teachers protest in front of M’laya CM’s bungalow

Contractual teachers in Meghalaya staged a protest in front of the Chief Minister’s official bungalow on Monday demanding reinstatement of their previous jobs.
The agitating teachers under the banner of All Meghalaya Government LP School Contractual Teachers’ Association (MGLPSTA) were later asked by the district authorities to move to a place near the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) which is opposite the Raj Bhavan.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was not inside the bungalow as he is on an official visit to Thailand.
The contractual teachers were demanding reinstatement despite the fact they failed in Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) exams. At least 800 teachers are demanding their reinstatement after their services were terminated in 2021.
“We have been appointed in Lower Primary and Upper Primary schools from 2010 onwards to educate children. MTET was introduced in 2010, the examination was conducted only in 2019 and by that time we were over-aged and many of us were not qualified,” MGLPSTA president, Birbor Riangtem said.
Riangtem said the contractual teachers will continue with the agitation till the government accedes to their demand.
